Online Gambling, Unlawful in South Africa
November 30, 2006
The Gauteng Gambling Act forbids Internet operators to offer online gambling within South Africa. Those who do not abide by the rules run the risk of being fined or being sent to prison.South Africa does not grant online casino licenses and the Gauteng Gambling Board have stated that licenses obtained in other countries are not valid on the South African territory. Consequently, the Court has ruled that the Piggs Peak Casino, the first to have been brought to trial for illegal gaming activities, does not operate legally in South Africa, despite the fact that it is registered in Swaziland. The Gauteng Gambling Board announced that they would file legal action against other Internet gaming providers, as well as against the media that try to facilitate Internet gambling within the South African borders.
