Microgaming software - Is it really that good?

One of the most popular and most used online gaming software in numerous online casinos all over the world is Microgaming. We expect top end quad core machines to become the minimum requirement in all entertainment providing Microgaming casinos.

Three Microgaming casinos can be updated at the same time, but trying to slip in a forth can be troublesome. Personally I do not have a problem updating and handling three simultaneously playing Microgaming casinos on my dual core machine. The system starts to work slower when I try to do this with a forth casino.

The troublesome part is the updating. After you are done updating your system should run fine. After the update is complete Microgaming software runs without any problems. This is because your system does just one thing, and that is run the games.

A single PC, multiple casinos

In my opinion you should find one good casino per software provider and if you are loyal to it, it will be loyal to you.

Let’s say that you are running ten Microgaming casinos ob your system. Have you been wondering why you are running out of disc space? It is because your system cannot handle all the workload.

Downloading a casino “the normal way” can take two to four hours. Who has the time and the patience to wait that long? Downloading a full Microgaming install on the other hand takes 15 to 10 minutes. You then have to wait ten more minutes for the install process to complete.

Note that a full Microgaming install loads itself entirely onto the RAM in order to self extract. This can exceed 300 MB, which will not make your system work any smoother. It takes a considerable amount of RAM, which is quite a challenge for most systems.

Microgaming CD installs also load themselves entirely onto the RAM in order to self extract. CD installs are usually out of date and require extensive updates.

Extensive Updates

The software is not kept up to date, unfortunately. Sometimes the update cycle is several months behind. A download for the full install is provided by a few groups.

When it comes to updating, with a 1.5 Mbp DSL connection it will take more than two hours to download and install a couple of games. The competition is offering way faster updates, but Microgaming seems to be falling behind in this department.

Personally I considered that casino downloads would be a piece of cake. The new games would not be available, but I thought everything else would work as it did the previous month. Boy was I wrong. There is nothing that you can modify on your system to prevent an MG casino from detecting the monthly update.

Slow downloads

PKZIP is a common package that extracts files and puts them in a tree of directories beneath the main directory. The player gets to choose the main directory.

My question is why can’t we download the entire compressed 350 MB casino package in a single go, and install everything locally in one operation. A download manager would be useful, but they attempt to manage the download as though the system was on dial-up.

The size of the full casino is over 600 MB. Still, four hours to download over 600 MB is too much. With a broadband connection simply downloading the casino file is a lot more convenient. And most players nowadays have a broadband connection.

Software bugs

The AutoPlay function on the Thunderstruck slots has an old bug that has not been fixed, even to this day. This is not the only bug. There is another where the first two reels stop and 3-5 just keep on spinning. They do not stop spinning, but instead you crash out of the game. The connection is not to blame, as the result has reached the client and was displayed on the first two reels.

I have personally notified the online casinos where I play and they said the problem is being taken care of. Clearly it has not been so far, presumably because the casinos cannot fix this problem themselves, they must refer the problem onwards, to Microgaming.

I have tried to fix the problem with a complete clean out and reinstall from scratch. The whole process took about ten hours, and it did not solve anything. What are they waiting for? Why aren’t they fixing those bugs?

New game releases

The current offer is of about 200 games. Around 50 to 60 new games are released every year.

The truth of the matter is that nobody is asking for new releases. The current offer is extensive enough. Instead I advise Microgaming developers to work on already released games and make them more user-friendly.

The players should be given a choice of either downloading the games they want, or downloading a package of games per computer. This package can be then accessed and used by all Microgaming casinos

Monthly Upgrades

Microgaming is currently releasing new games every month. But every time they release a game, they update all the existing games as well. I cannot imagine why they do such a thing. I mean it takes three to four hours just to download the full install package for the first time. What will a player that tries Microgaming for the first time think? What are they going to think about having to spend three to four hours just to download the install package in order to try a few free games?

Note that while the upgrade process takes place the games are subjected to slow play and long connection delays. If you are updating your Microgaming software and playing slots at the same time, it will sometimes take minutes for a reel to stop.

And now I leave you with my final thoughts. Microgaming powered casinos indeed offer a large number of high quality games. These games are state of the art and offer loads of features. But players have to play at only a few Microgaming casinos and thus lose out on various bonuses, or they have to play a lower quality, no-download, Flash version of the casino software. Modern Microgaming games work best if you have a broadband internet connection.

The title is not true and any Texas Hold’em player knows it. Texas Hold’em it’s not just about the luck, because skill is the decisive factor of the game. The luck is also somewhat important, as it is in everything, but relying only on luck to win won’t help you with anything.

These are the different decision required in a Texas Hold’em game:

You will have to decide which hands are worth laying, in what situations, considering the number of opponents, their playing style, your position at the table, the size of your stack, and the previous bets.

Then there is the bluffing, which is another essential skill. When you bluff you have to convince your opponents that you have a much greater hand than the one you are currently holding, in order to make them fold.
Another skill, the opposite of bluffing, is reading players. You have to read the players and try to understand when they are bluffing and when they really have a great hand. If you posses this skill you will be able to prevent some losses and gain some money.

There are much more situations that require skill, and as you can see you can’t just rely on luck. There are other games, like roulette, where you can’t modify the result, but poker isn’t such a game. Poker relies on skill and you can improve your skill to become a better poker player.

Poker vs. Lotto - Aren’t both games of chance?

Regarding the state lottery there are millions of people that play the lottery or buy lottery scratchers. Just the other day I was out and I saw a queue of people waiting to buy lottery tickets. Some of them even bought $50 worth of lottery tickets. Are they deliberately looking for the worst return on their money? I mean what are the chances of you winning the lottery? One in a million? One in a billion?

The worst gamblers are those addicted to lottery scratchers. They keep buying and buying lottery scratchers even though they never win everything. The only thing I ever won at scratchers was free scratchers or insignificant amounts of money not even worth mentioning.

The truth of the matter is this: lottery tickets and lottery scratchers are forms of gambling. They are games of chance, but the odds of you winning are very low. Some lottery jackpots may be huge, life altering, but you have little to no chance of winning it. You are better off doing something else with the money you spend on lottery tickets and lottery scratchers. That is why I simply refuse to play the state lottery.

Gambling is a fun, exciting activity, enjoyed by millions of people all over the world. But wasting your money and getting the worst possible return on your money is never fun. In my opinion gambling is about having fun but it should be also profitable. That is why instead of playing the state lottery I choose to play poker. This is because at poker I have a good chance of walking away with a profit.

Let us compare poker and the state lottery. Playing poker is fun, exciting and entertaining, but it also offers a skilled poker player a good chance of walking away with a profit. Poker is a game of skill and experience, knowledge, and a correct strategy will make all the difference. On the long run a skilled poker player will always come out on top.

The state lottery on the other hand offers the same chances to everyone. Skill, experience, and strategy do not matter. Your ticket has the same chances of winning as the next ticket. It all depends on luck, and you must be extremely lucky indeed to win that elusive lottery ticket.

The bottom line is this: both poker and the lottery are forms of gambling. But unlike the lottery, poker is not a game of chance. It is a game of skill. Unfortunately for American poker players, the American legislators refuse to accept this simple fact. The recently passed Internet Gambling Enforcement Act comes to prevent financial transactions with gambling web sites that provide games of chance for real money.

Bill Frist, Senate Majority Leader slipped the Internet Gambling Enforcement Act into a port security measure at the last minute of the legislative session. There was no real debate on the gambling part of the bill. After debate had commenced it was simply slipped in right before the final vote of the port security measure.

The bill was considered a “gimmie” because of the security ramifications. Frist took advantage and overexerted his influence as an appeal to the hardcore right-wing crowd right before election time.

Does freedom and democracy mean nothing in America nowadays? How did an overzealous politician manage to pass such a bill with no direct vote, and little to no debate? Did anyone stop to think about the economic ramifications of the bill?

Ironically enough the bill did not manage to prevent people from gambling online. People have already found ways around it.

The 2007 NCAA basketball tournament - Over 30 million people involved in office pools

At least now we know why productivity drops during the basketball tournament.

The NCAA basketball tournament starts every year on March 15th and lasts until April 2nd. The national championship game will take place Monday, April 2nd.

A total of 64 basketball teams will take part in this tournament. They will battle it out on the basketball field until there will be just two. The only way to stay in the tournament is to keep winning. All the losing teams are out of the tournament. This is traditionally called “The Big Dance”.

Out of the 64 teams that started the tournament, the 32 winners will play on Thursday and Friday and again Saturday or Sunday. 48 teams will be out of the tournament by late Sunday night. The remaining 16 teams, known as the “Sweet 16” will advance to the third round next Thursday and Friday. Only 8 teams will be left two days later. Four teams will be left later on, and then the national championship game will take place.

According to the experts people will wager around $2.5 billion on the NCAA basketball tournament this year. Only 4% of the estimated $2.5 billion will be wagered legally in Nevada.

Fun fact: The total amount of money wagered on the NCAA basketball tournament surpasses the amount of money wagered on the last Super Bowl.

Mathematical fact: The odds of picking a perfect bracket are 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 to 1. That is 9 quintillion to 1, or a billion times bigger than 9 billion. It is even bigger that Bill Gates’ estimated fortune.

Here is how I think about it: if every man, woman and child on planet Earth randomly filled out 10 million brackets each, the odds would be less than 1% that even one would have a perfect bracket.

The horses with fast and steady workouts are the ones you should favor. A fast workout is a workout with 12 second furlongs or less, and a steady workout is one uninterrupted at different intervals of days (7, 10, and so on). The “don’t” craps bets

The main thing that you must know about craps players is that they are highly superstitious. The two main categories of bets that you can make at the craps table are “with the dice bets and “against the dice bets”.

Making a “with the dice bet” means that you are wagering that the shooter will win. ‘With the dice bets” include pass line, proposition, come and field bets. These are considered “right side” bets and most of the players at the table place “with the dice” wagers
