Avoid getting too caught up in the English Premiership

April 23, 2007

When it comes to football there is no other league more exciting than the English Premiership. Millions of football fans watch the live matches that are shown in numerous countries. Betting on the English Premiership is intensely promoted by the bookmakers and as a consequence football betting has increased in popularity over the last ten years. A lot of time and effort is put into getting the odds right for all the premiership fixtures and markets simply because the English Premiership is so popular.

The bookmakers take less money on lower league matches so that they can take more money on Premiership matches. And they also spend far less time analyzing these matches and setting up the odds. The English Premiership matches are the main focus and the lower league matches are simply pushed aside. But if you support your local team or you are a well informed football bettor you can make a nice profit from these lower league matches. Take injury reports for examples. Most bookmakers forget about them when pricing up the lower league matches.

I will give you an example from my own experience. I am a season ticket holder at Bristol City. This division is lower in the league and far less popular than the English Premiership. Early in the season I made a rather considerable profit by laying Bristol City to lose. The reason I did this is rather simple. I simply watched the games and noticed that they are not on top of their game. They were playing poorly and their confidence was at an all-time low.

The bookmakers on the other hand offered very low prices at the start of the season. The bookies were actually expecting Bristol to come out of their slump and turn things around. Consequently I got low prices and excellent value prices for laying Bristol City. They did not turn the corner, they played as poorly as before and I made a nice profit.

The odds compilers do not research smaller league games as thoroughly as they do when Premiership matches are involved. So chances are that you could make a nice profit on these games. Take Divisions 2 and 3 of the Scottish league for example. I know people that bet only on these leagues and won. European leagues such as the Austrian or Belgian leagues also offer good sports betting opportunities. If you happen to live in one of those countries you will definitely have an edge in terms of information on form, team news and injuries.

The point I am trying to make is this: there’s no doubt that the English Premiership offers incredible betting opportunities. But if you want to get the best return on your money, if you want to make the best of some very lucrative betting options, I definitely advise you to look outside the premiership and major leagues. Lower league matches are just as advantageous.
