Value poker tournaments

June 18, 2007

Let’s take things one at a time. First of all you must understand what the term value tournament refers to. In my opinion the term is rather self-explanatory. But jut to make sure, it refers to getting full value for your buy in. These games are beneficial and highly profitable. Numerous online sites offer such tournaments, more so those who don’t have the huge numbers of players online all the time. The buy-in is fair most of the times. But the poker rooms add money to it and it can go as high as $800 for a large guaranteed payment tournament. What makes it a lucrative option is the fact that the number of registered players is minimal at best.

Let’s take a look at an example. You decided to play the $2500 GP at a $20 buy in. You can easily see the registration go up to well over 500, on some of the larger networks. There are 540 players in the tournament. By using the basic payout structure, you would get a 20.5% payout of the prize pool if you place 1st. You would thus receive a payout of $2624. You won well over $2000 and all you had to do was pay the $20 buy in. There’s no doubt about it, these tournaments can prove to be very profitable. But can you do this on a regular basis? Do you have what it takes to win again and again?

Let’s take a look at another example. This time a smaller room is involved. A smaller, low traffic room is offering an $8000 GP at a $20 buy in. There are 150 players in the tournament. By using the basic payout structure, you would get a 26% payout of the prize pool if you place 1st. You would thus receive a payout of $2080.

I am guessing that right about now you are saying something like this: Why bother with a low traffic room when I can make a larger profit on the other site? After all, the profit is $600 larger on the bigger room. This is where value comes in. The high traffic room offers a huge prize pool that looks appealing, but in order to get it you will have to face some serious competition. This can prove to be a daunting task at a registrant of 500+ players. At the low traffic room on the other hand your odds of winning first prize look better. There are fewer challengers, and for the same buy in you get to win a prize that is almost equal to the one offered by the larger room. It is obvious that you get better value at the smaller room.

You will have to shop around in order to find the best value tournaments. Do not dismiss large games altogether. Instead try to look at all the aspects of every game, for money management purposes. You can spend all your bankroll very quickly by playing a field of 500+ players every tournament.

The 2004 World Series of Poker

June 12, 2007

Poker is becoming more and more popular worldwide, and the 2004 WSOP proved it. 2,576 players competed in the event, which was a record. The event was broadcasted and millions of people were able to watch it.

Many players qualified to the event by winning some online tournaments. It was clear that poker was getting more and more popular since at the 2003 WSOP, only 839 competed.

No one expected such a large number of players and because of this only 1,200 could play at once. During a weekend half of the 2,576 players played in the first part of the day, and half played in the latter part. This increased the excitement.

Monday, the remaining players competed and in that day more than half were eliminated. The fans watched the competition intensely. This edition of the WSOP set another record: the winner, Greg Raymer, won $5 million.

This could be achieved by the record number of players, who paid $10,000 each for the entry fee. Amateurs competed in the vent as well, hoping to win a fabulous prize. The popularity of the event is growing and more and more players get ready to compete in the event.

Beginner poker players play online poker for free

June 6, 2007

If you are a beginner poker player and you want to improve your game then you should play online poker for free. There are plenty of online sites where you can enjoy a great game of poker and work on your poker skills without having to spend a dime. For the past few years more and more people have turned to playing free online poker in order to better their game or to simply have a bit of fun. There is one thing that you must always pay attention to, and that is proper bankroll management.

Let’s say that you do not have any money to spend but you want to play a nice game of poker. Simply go online and find a free game. Playing fantastic games of poker without spending any money at all is simply a click away.

There is one thing that you should know about poker. In order to become a pro you have to practice, practice, practice. You are well advised to find all the information you can on the subject as it will definitely help your game. But you have to put in the time and practice if you want to become a pro. Think of it as being a parent. No matter how much you read about it, you will still be caught off guard when the baby arrives.

The great thing about free online poker is that you get to work on your skills for free, but later on you can use those skills to play for real money and make a nice profit. All you have to do is register with a free online poker site and you could be playing free online poker in no time at all. There are other advantages too. First of all there are no time limitations. You can play whenever you feel like it, day or night. These free online poker sites will also offer you detailed instructions as well as access to walkthroughs and tips from experts in the domain, and it is all for free. You can use all these resources to form certain game reflexes.

Things are slightly different when it comes to playing for real money. Obviously you should not attempt to play real money games unless you are confident that your skills are good enough. It is not worth it to play for real money and lose, now is it?

You can play free poker only online. No land based casino will ever let you play poker for free. But there are tons and tons of online poker sites out there and all of them want to attract more and more customers. Naturally they will compete for these customers and will provide very lucrative offers. For the regular poker player this is a great opportunity and you are well advised to take advantage of these bonuses and offers.

People are rather predictable. Let’s say that John Doe wants to play online poker. He will go online, use the search engine of his choice, and click on the first result that appears. Because people are most likely to play in the first room they get in touch with, advertising is extremely important.

But even if a person starts playing at the first online poker room he finds, this does not mean he will keep playing there. His devotion to that particular poker site is questionable at best, especially if the services and games offered are not high quality.

Luckily there are ways to test a poker site without having to spend any money. You can take advantage of what is known as a “no deposit bonus”. You can thus set up your own bankroll for free. A $40 free, bankroll builder, for example, gives the player a starting point, while not threatening his finances. You can check out the services and games that the company provides, and if you like them you can keep playing there. You get high quality games and services, the company gets a new long term customer, and everybody is happy.

Note that a $40 bankroll builder is indeed free money that you can use to play poker at a particular site. It is a great way to test the quality of the games and services that the poker site offers, not to mention that you can work on your poker skills for free. What you cannot do is cash in that $40. The only reason why you got those free $40 was so that you would spend it playing poker. You cannot just cash it in and walk away.

You are well advised to carefully read the terms and conditions regarding these bonuses as they may differ from one poker site to another. Usually you will be able to cash in the money only after playing a predetermined number of hands. And if you are a good poker player you could walk away with a nice profit without having spent a dime.

The reasons why you should play Texas Hold’Em online

May 30, 2007

Are you tired of worrying about money? A regular job does not provide enough income for you and you would like a secondary source of income? Well, in this case why don’t you give online poker a shot? By picking up a few poker secrets you too can play poker like a pro. You will be able to make a lot of cash and have lots of fun in the process. Texas Hold’Em is a very profitable form on poker, and by learning a few tips and tricks you could play it proficiently. The process is very simple and not at all boring or tedious. Many have learned to play Texas Hold’Em and have ended up mastering the game and profiting from their invested time.

Two hole cards will be dealt to each player after the blinds bets have been placed. A player will place the small blind and another player will place the big blind. A small blind bet is usually equal in value to half the lower stake. So for a $10 / $20 Hold’Em game the small blind would be $5. The big blind bet must be made by the player sitting to the left of the small blind. A big blind bet is usually equal in value to the lower stake limit. So for a $10 / $20 Hold’Em game the big blind would be $10. The blind will rotate clockwise around the table and each player will have their turn of making this bet.

The first round of betting will now begin. The betting will start from the player to the left of the player that made the big blind bet.  If he wants to stay in the game he must call the big blind. His options are to call, raise or fold.

Calling means that you want to place a wager equal in value to the wager placed by the previous player.

Raising your bet means increasing the amount wagered by the previous player. You must call his bet by placing the same betting amount as he did and increase that with and additional raise amount. So for a $10 / $20 Hold’Em game raising means that you will automatically call the previous bet of $10 and place a raise of another $10. You will have to wager a total of $20.

Folding means that you give up on your hand. If you do so you are out of the game and you will lose all your wagers.

All following players will get to call, raise or fold. The player that placed the small blind must make the difference between small and big blinds if he wants to stay in the game. He must also match any raises made by other players.

The last player to bet is the one that made the big blind. He may fold, call or raise. If he decides to raise he cannot do this more than a maximum of three times.

After all the players have finished making their bets it is time for the flop. This is when the dealer will place three cards on the table. These cards are dealt face up and are community cards. Community cards refer to the fact that any player can use community cards to make up a poker hand.

The second round of betting will now begin. The betting will start from the player that made the small blind bet. He may bet or check. If he checks and all the other players also check, no amounts will be added to the pot.

Checking means that you pass on your turn to bet. You simply do not want to make a bet and you pass. The next player will get to check, bet or raise.

If any player decides to bet, all the other players that checked must call his bet in order to stay in the game.

After all the players have finished making their bets it is time for the turn or 4th street. This is when the dealer will place a forth card on the table, face up.

The third round of betting will now begin. The bets are set to the high limit for the third round of betting. For a $10 / $20 Hold’Em game the high limit is $20.

The betting will start from the player that made the small blind bet. He may check, bet, raise or fold. All following player may check, bet, raise or fold.

After all the players have finished making their bets it is time for the river. This is when the dealer will place a fifth card on the table, face up.

The forth and final round of betting will now begin. The bets are set to the high limit for the third round of betting. For a $10 / $20 Hold’Em game the high limit is $20. The betting will start from the player that made the small blind bet. He may check, bet, raise or fold. All following player may check, bet, raise or fold.

After all the players have finished making their bets it is time to determine the winner. The player with the strongest poker hand will win and get the pot. In the eventuality that there is a tie, the pot will be split equally between the winning players. The round and the hand are over.

By using a search engine and doing a simple internet search you can find loads of information on Texas Hold’Em secrets and other online poker secrets. You can also visit dedicated sites, forums, read articles, and even try your hand in a free game. It pays to be informed, so do not risk your money until you are definitely ready to play the game.

Below I have presented a few tips that should help you in your process of becoming a poker pro

The first thing that you must do in order to maximize your chances of winning is to choose an adequate table. You are well advised to pick a poker table in accordance to your level of expertise. It is even better to find a table where your opponents are beneath your level. This way you may take advantage of their weaknesses. Keep in mind that many know online poker secrets and they might take advantage of you. Always keep this information in mind: the average pot size, their speed (hands per hour) and how much they are willing to play.

Another good poker tip is to place other good poker players to your right. This way you will make your decision after they have made theirs. It is always a good idea to benefit from the other players who like to raise the stake without having a back up. Make sure that they are seated to your left. Remember to always stay focused and on top of your game.

This next tip is very important: know when to walk away. Do not get too caught up in the game and always be aware of the moment when the game is no longer favorable to you. You will surely lose money if you get carried away.

Dangerous poker players and the key to detect them

May 29, 2007

First of all what do you know about a dangerous poker player? What makes a poker player dangerous? Well, personally when I think of a dangerous poker player a think of someone I respect, fear, admire, and would like to imitate at the same time.

After spending just a few minutes at a particular poker table you should be able to figure out which player is the weakest. If you cannot accurately say which player is the weakest, then chances are that you are that player. This helpful piece of information will always help your game, but let’s look at things from a different angle. After you have pinpointed the weakest player, why not figure out which poker player is the strongest. You should be able to do so in around fifteen minutes. If you fail to pinpoint the strongest player at the table then maybe you should walk away. This of course does not apply if you happen to be the most dangerous player in the game.

This will help you stay on top of your game. By pinpointing the weakest player you will know whom to intimidate and outplay. By pinpointing the strongest player you will know whom to avoid.

Here is a question for you. When playing Hold’Em, Stud, Omaha, what traits should you look for in order to determine if a player is potentially dangerous or not? You would definitely stay focused and be careful against a player in regards to his deceitful play, changing gears, betting or raising strategy.

One opinion regarding dangerous poker players is that a dangerous player is one that you could rarely put on a hand. That player seems to be playing tight and aggressive. But somehow he manages to surprise you repeatedly when they do show down a hand.

A second opinion regarding dangerous poker players is that there are two kinds of dangerous players. First there are stupid poker players, and they are always dangerous. Second there are very good poker players, and they are dangerous simply because they are so good.

Below you will find a list of things I keep an eye out in order to spot dangerous poker players:

- On the flop a dangerous poker player will watch the players around the table and not the cards.

- In the same betting round a dangerous poker player is able to raise and release a hand at the same time.

- They never show a hand voluntarily.

- Dangerous poker players usually bluff on the river. This may be the subtlest clue, but it is also one of best indicators of a dangerous player.

Here are a few other things I for in someone that I consider to be a dangerous poker player:

- He plays aggressively;

- He always makes the best decision;

- He folds a large number of hands, but when he plays a hand he usually wins;

- Nothing can influence his game in a negative manner.

I will know present you a situation from my own personal experience. Sometimes I would find myself playing in an unfamiliar poker room. I did not know anybody there, but all the players knew each other, and they even knew the dealer. That was an intimidating situation and I used to consider them dangerous players. My reasoning was that since they know each other they must surely know how they play and in order go get an edge they only have to watch me play. They only had to concentrate in learning how I played. I, in turn had to watch how all of them played to pick up any information. This was a much more difficult task. As it turned out I was mistaken in considering them dangerous players. No matter how well they knew each other or the dealer, it did not make them better poker players. In fact I could not believe how poorly some of them would play.

Let’s say that I pick a poker table and I sit down. Although I have never met any of the players at the table, I never judge anyone by his appearance. Instead I play a few hands and closely monitor them and judge them by how well they play. Just because you look intimidating does not necessarily mean you will be a more successful poker player. The quiet players that just sit back and take in all the action can prove to be the most dangerous poker players. They are like chameleons, always blending in with the game background. They are not loudmouths, they do not brag, give lessons, or berate other players. Keep an eye out for these players for they will surely win, and win big.

A chameleon just sits there quietly, blending in with the surroundings, and you do not even notice it until it ambushes you. That is exactly what will happen when playing against these quiet, chameleon like players.

Some players can raise pre-flop and then dump the hand after the flop, if bet into or raised. The hand looked good, but went sour on the flop or turn. These players are not afraid of making the right decision, which is giving up on such a hand.

Let’s say that there is a dangerous poker player at the table and he is in a rush. In this case I will carefully select the hands I will play against him. Sometimes I will give up on hands that I usually play against weaker opponents.

Use an online poker system and win - Is that possible?

May 28, 2007

First of all let us see what an online poker system is. Basically it is a system that when used regularly and consistently will generate regular and consistent profits for the poker player. The main question though is why we need a poker system.

There are people out there that are poker naturals. They do not use any system or strategy and somehow they make the right decision and consequently win. They are in tune with the game and by using only their instincts they know when to call, when to raise, and more importantly when to fold.

You may think you are a poker natural yourself. Think twice, you may have simply been lucky so far and that is why you did not lose. People that are not poker naturals need a little help to win and this is where a poker strategies and systems come in handy.

By using a poker system you can improve your game and your chances of winning. Many poker pros use poker betting systems to regularly earn nice profits. The first things you will need in order to have a system or to modify your system are metrics.

Understanding the mathematical odds of poker is crucial to your success. Whilst your brain already knows the rough percentages, you may want to consider a special indicator program for calculating the exact odds of your hand and those of your opponents. For a good online poker system though, they are not essential.

When to continue and when to fold based only on your hole cards is one important aspect of an online poker system you will want to take into consideration. Let’s say that you have been dealt two low cards of different suits. In this case you should probably fold your hand. But if you have been dealt a pair of Aces, then you should definitely stay in the game. You should give these systems a shot on low money or free money tables. Also try them on at least fifty hands in order to see if they help better your game.

The variable presented above is just a simple example, but I hope it illustrates the point I am trying to make. There are many other variables, such as hand percentage differential, reacting to re-raises, and so on. Every time you try to make a decision in poker, it can be quantified and tested.

If you are willing to put in the time and the effort you can come up with an online poker system of your own. There are some poker pros that share their knowledge, so pay attention to their advice when setting up your personal system.

How to play different types of Sit and Go poker

May 21, 2007

In this article we will discus the following types of Sit and Go poker games:

- $2, $4, $8, $16, and $32.

If you are looking for a game with weak players and that does not require you to use a very sophisticated strategy, then you should try beginner Sit and Go tournaments. You are well advised to play tight in the beginning, a bit more flexible later in the tournament, and aggressive at all times. There are other options, besides beginner Sit and Go tournaments. There are tournaments ranging from $3 to $200, with a full ten players, and short handed to six. If you would like you could also play heads up games.

When participating in a beginner Sit and Go tournament you will notice that most of the players are inexperienced and will probably not be able to beat you. There are some differences between all the various Sit and Go tournaments. Personally I only play $2 games when I am down on my luck. There are times when I just cannot win. This is when I turn to $2 Sit and Go tournaments because they are extremely loose. By playing extremely tight I manage to get back on the right track.

If you are thinking of playing $4 Sit and Go tournaments then you should know that most of the players you will be facing are just as good as those in $2 Sit and Go tournaments. This is to say that you should not have a problem beating them. The thing about this type of tournament is that you will run into two types of players. The first type is represented by extremely loose players who play badly. The second type is represented by conservative players who are rather weak. You will have to adapt your poker play to the type of player you encounter.

Let us talk about $8 Sit and Go tournaments now. These types of tournaments are considerably different from the ones we presented above. The players are not as weak; in fact they are moderately good. You will still be able to defeat these players, just that you will have to work a bit harder. You will have to pay attention to the game and adapt your strategy if you want to make a profit by playing in these tournaments.

If you are thinking of playing $16 Sit and Go tournaments then you should know that most of the players you will be facing are rather good. Not good enough to beat you though. Note that these players know the basics, know basic odds, basic styles, and will know to re-raise a minimum raise. You will have to keep your guard up and play well if you want to make a profit. If you manage to do that you will discover that these tournaments can prove to be rather profitable. Not to mention that people will not pick up on the fact that you are a good player taking part in beginner Sit and Go tournaments.

At the $32 Sit and Go tables you will have to face sharp players. Some of these players are rather good so you should to locate the best two players and avoid them at all cost. You need not do that if you are a very good player and you know you can defeat them. Let’s say that you get a strong chip advantage early in the tournament. In that case you should sit on it and push harder late in the tournament. For a good poker player such games can prove to be very lucrative.

Remember that there are differences between these types of tournaments. If you are on top of your game you should not have a problem defeating the competition and you should be able to make a nice profit. Always pay attention to your game and look for flaws. You should also look for ways of improving your game.

How to play Sit and Go poker like a winner

May 8, 2007

There are two ways of learning to play Sit and Go poker: there’s the loser way and the winner way. Below I will present a few incorrect beliefs about playing poker. If you want to play poker like a pro and win you are better of not taking heed to such advice. The first step though is realizing what the wrong steps are and correcting them.

- Practice makes better. Just keep playing and eventually you will improve.

Well, they do have something there. It is true that you can improve your skill by playing, but not if you do so randomly. Most people just start playing and hope that by doing so they are becoming better and better at poker. You can learn a lot of bad habits this way. You must learn to play proficiently from the start or those bad habits will become a permanent part of your poker play. The first step is to learn the correct techniques and principles. This way when you play you will improve and you will improve the good way. Think of it this way. If someone is bad driver, his students will inevitably become bad drivers. But if he is a good driver, then his students will be good drivers themselves.

- Reading your opponent’s body language

Having a keen sense of observation and knowing how to read your opponent will give you an extra edge, but only if you are playing in land based casino. This tip is absolutely worthless outside the land based casino or poker room. Most people nowadays play online. The only way to “read” them is not by looking at them, since that would be practically impossible, but by analyzing their betting pattern. Learning this vital skill will allow you to counter act pretty much any play they make with a better or stronger one. You will know exactly what they are planning and you will act accordingly.

- Set up a game plan before starting to play and stick to it

This is the lousiest advice ever. What happens if your game plan is completely incompatible with your opponents’ playing style? By sticking to it you will lose, and lose big. The key is to adapt, to modify your playing style accordion to your opponent’s style. At the same time you must not let him pick up on your style of playing. This way you will be unbeatable. And there are loads of such players online. They play poorly and you will be able to take them for all they’re worth.

You cannot go to a poker table with a predetermined game plan and expect to win every time. Poker is not about that, it is about psychology and mental awareness. The same strategy that worked against one opponent may prove to be worthless against another opponent. Analyze and adapt, that is the key. If you can do that, you will have profitable poker session every time.

- It is all about the luck of the draw, it is all about luck

Well, I do admit that sometimes the luck of the draw can be a nasty thing. You may think you have the round won and your opponent will hit it big on the river and completely turn things around. But the part about poker being all about luck is complete nonsense. Poker is a game of skill. Ok, you may win a hand or two if you get really lucky. But if you want to win consistently, and if you want to have a lucrative poker session, then it is all about skill. Luck may play a part in poker, but it is a small part. A skillful player will always win, and a skillful player with luck on his side is an unbeatable combination.

Tips for a lucrative poker session

May 2, 2007

Nowadays you can enjoy a nice game of poker without even leaving the house. All you need is a PC and an internet connection. Playing online poker is very convenient and the sessions can prove to be very lucrative. That’s if you keep a few tips in mind.

The tips presented below are meant to help you improve your poker game and come out a winner. Note that these tips will not guarantee that you will win, but they will increase your chances of winning.

- Play tight in the beginning;

This means that you should play the hands that are strong and have an actual chance of winning. Fold the weak hands.

- There is a time and place for everything;

What I mean by that is that you should know when to fold your hand and when to stay in the game. Poker is a game of skill and you must always be aware of your odds and what you should do. Folding at the right time will prevent you from losing a lot of money, while staying in the game when the odds are in your favor will win you that huge pot. Luck has little to do with the outcome of the hand. It is all about skill.

- Take a little time and consider why you are playing the game;

If all you want is to have a little fun, then play away. But if you wan to win, and win consistently, then make sure to pick the right opponent. Playing poker online is great when it comes to picking your opponents. Since people from all over the world can join in and play, it is relatively easy to find easy opponents to bet.

- Know when to walk away;

If you just can’t seem to win, then you should postpone your session for another time. Save your money for another session.

- Keep a close eye on your opponents;

Reading your opponents when playing in a traditional land based casino is easy. All you have to do is look at them and pick up on their telltale signs. When playing poker online you should keep an eye on your opponents’ betting pattern. Thus you should know in advance what they are planning to do.

- There is an art of betting;

You are well advised to play tight and defensive. Always be on top of your game and always be aware what the best decision to make is. If you know when it is the proper time to make a bet, you will also pick up on what your opponent is holding.

- Think like your opponent;

Put yourself in your opponent’s shoes. What will he do next? How will he bet? Is he holding a strong hand, or is he bluffing? If you can accurately predict his next moves you will have a lucrative poker session.

- The art of bluffing;

You cannot say that you are a pro if you do not know how to bluff. Bluffing at the right time can make the difference between winning and losing a hand. Most beginner players will fall for this technique, while experienced players will be confused and will not know what to make of your game.

- There are various poker hands and you should learn to play them all;

The key to winning at poker is knowing how to play all the different types of hands. The worst thing that you could do is to give away your hand by playing it poorly. An experienced poker player will pick up on what you are holding just by analyzing you game play. Put in the time and practice using different types of hands.

- You position at the poker table matters;

You might think that where you are seated does not matter. In fact it does matter, and it matters a lot. A player sitting in early position is disadvantaged from the start. The player sitting in last position on the other hand has the upper hand. He gets to observe all the players at the table and modify his game play according to how the other players acted.

- Put in the time and gather as much information on poker as possible;

You are already playing poker online, so why not take the time to read online books and online articles regarding poker playing, poker strategies and poker tips. The information you gather will help you be on top of your game and will prevent you from making foolish mistakes.

By taking these tips into consideration you may have already gained an edge. After all, they are meant to help you win and have a lucrative poker session. Just remember that your personal input is always welcomed. Adapt these tips to your personal style of poker playing. And always remember to enjoy yourself while playing the game.

Keep a cool head at the Texas Hold’Em poker table

April 25, 2007

Keeping a cool head, maintaining you composure is a definite must if you want to become a Texas Hold’Em, poker pro. You must be able to keep you poker face on, refrain from exposing you emotions, and most of all control your chips. If you lack these characteristics maybe you should find another game to play.

Getting angry will not help your game. If you get angry you will place bad bets and lose considerable amounts of money.

Texas Hold’Em poker is just a game. Move on if a something bad happens. Forget about previous hands and focus on future hands.

Here is a hot tip. Always bet smart. Wager as much money as you can afford to lose. Yes, I said lose. Never take all your money and hope that you will win and make a huge profit. You must always take into consideration the eventuality that you will lose all your bankroll. So always wager only as much as you can afford.

The point of course is to win. But chances are that you will not. If that happens you will not walk away thinking that you just lost the rent money.

The main purpose of Texas Hold’Em and any other casino game is to have fun. Entertainment is the main value of any casino game.

Take the time to learn the rules, read a few guides, play a few games for free and work on your skill. Do not start playing for real money if you are a beginner. Rushing into things will not help.

If you sit at the table and you do not have the right goal and mindset you may lose a lot of money.

Sit and go tournaments are the way to go if you are just now building your poker bankroll.
