Attempt To Support Online Gambling

 The European Betting Association, in collaboration with Bwin, is planning to launch several awareness campaigns meant to support online gambling. The first targeted country is Germany and the move precedes the legislative discussions of the 16 German Landers who will meet in December in order to debate the contents of the new gambling legislation which will be signed into law next year. These campaigns aim at convincing European governments to give up gambling monopolies and to no longer impose gambling restrictions for foreign operators.

Online Gambling, Unlawful in South Africa

The Gauteng Gambling Act forbids Internet operators to offer online gambling within South Africa. Those who do not abide by the rules run the risk of being fined or being sent to prison.South Africa does not grant online casino licenses and the Gauteng Gambling Board have stated that licenses obtained in other countries are not valid on the South African territory. Consequently, the Court has ruled that the Piggs Peak Casino, the first to have been brought to trial for illegal gaming activities, does not operate legally in South Africa, despite the fact that it is registered in Swaziland. The Gauteng Gambling Board announced that they would file legal action against other Internet gaming providers, as well as against the media that try to facilitate Internet gambling within the South African borders.

The UK Gambling Commission at Work

The British Gambling Commission has issued the “License Conditions and Codes of Practice” in which it presents all the requirements that Internet operators have to meet in order to be granted a UK gambling license. All gaming operators that want to run a business in the UK will have to obtain a license from the Gambling Commission. The main objectives of this regulatory body are to prevent crime, to ensure a fair and open gambling environment and to protect children and other vulnerable categories. The code does not include information about the taxes that UK-based operators will have to pay to the British government.
