Growing Number of UK Casinos

November 30, 2006

The UK Gambling Commission has announced that it approved all 29 casino applications it had analyzed in the past months. Many casino owners have rushed to apply since the 2007 gambling legislation will restrict the number of new casinos to 17. The second step for these casinos is to be allowed to function by local authorities; it seems that the British local authorities have approved only 40 per cent of the applications they handled this year. At present there are around 140 land-based casinos in Britain and the number is expected to reach 190; analysts say that the growing number of casinos could lead to oversupply and fear that many of the new casinos may not last on the gambling market.

November 30, 2006

In a recent market research study, Nielsen/Net Ratings showed that around 5.8 million British citizens gambled online every month from April to September. The figures prove that gambling is indeed part of the entertainment industry in UK. As from September 2007, Internet gambling will be fully legal in Britain and gaming operators will have the opportunity to set up their business here. In the meanwhile, the Gambling Commission is trying to regulate online gambling and to take all possible measures in order to protect customers. The Gambling Commission will also be in charge of supervising gambling sites, checking for relations with organized crime and making sure that the gaming operators comply with the existing gambling legislation. By regulating the Internet gambling industry, the UK government makes sure that its citizens play in a secure, fair and crime free gaming environment.

UK To Allow Card Games in Pubs

November 30, 2006

The British government is planning to remove restrictions on Internet gambling and to allow card games in pubs, thus striving to promote an industry that has considerably expanded over the last years. The laws that forbade playing card games for money in pubs will be changed next year; the 2007 Gambling Act will permit pubs to organize low-stakes poker games, so long as they don’t derive a profit from this activity. Nevertheless, games such as Blackjack and roulette will still not be accepted in pubs. Though the measure is aimed at enabling people to have freedom of choice when deciding how to spend their spare time, some voices say that combining alcohol with gambling is a bad idea that would lead to lots of problems.
