US Yet Again Postpones WTO Online Gambling Process

Nov 19th 2007

In the years that came after the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act) was put into practice in the online gambling industry, online gambling and online bingo websites based outside of the US effectively stopped running their business in that country. Also European Union and Antigua legislative bodies have been seeking to obtain damages for losses in trade via the World Trade Organization in their online gambling case against the US.

Hopes for a solution to their negotiations have been until now unsuccessful, as the US have introduced further delays to the process. World Trade Organization authorities ruled that the US online gambling ban is illegal but instead of amending the UIGEA consequently, the US government is searching for solutions for withdrawal from the WTO responsibilities in this affair. This is demoralizing for European-based online gambling and online bingo websites running for now their hopes of returning to business in the States anytime soon.

In a Reuters articles, US Trade Representative, spokesperson Gretchen Hamel declared: “To facilitate all parties with enough time to find a successful ruling, the United States and the WTO have decided together that these talks should be extended until December 14.”
